The Mayor Of Havre de Grace Wayne Dougherty was authorized with the support of Council to appoint a temporary committee with the task of coordinating the Bicentennial Celebration of the War of 1812 in the City of Havre de Grace.
The committee consists of two members of the City Council and one member from each of the following boards, commissions or museums: Havre de Grace Tourism Advisory Board, Economic Development Advisory Board, Historic Preservation Committee, Arts Commission, Lock House Museum, Friends of the Concord Point Lighthouse, Decoy Museum, Maritime Museum, 4th of July Committee, Havre de Grace Main Street, Skipjack Martha Lewis, Steppingstone Museum, Havre de Grace Public Library, Harford County Office of Tourism, Havre de Grace Chamber of Commerce, City Staff, American Legion and the VFW.
The Committee met last week to begin the planning efforts for the events for the Commemoration of the War of 1812. Chair Councilman William Martin began the meeting introducing a new logo designed by Elementary Design by Watson, with help of the Havre de Grace Office Tourism. “This logo was produced with a tag line to outline our role in the War of 1812. These terms, Resolve, Resilience, Remembrance, outline chapters of our story,” stated Councilman Martin.
“We are excited to be able to display the logo design on letterhead, business cards, banners and flags to brand and build partnerships to tell our story and Commemorate the War of 1812,” said Brigitte Peters, City of Havre de Grace Manager of Marketing and Tourism.
The Committee will report to the Mayor and City Council with a schedule and events for the Bicentennial Celebration.

I like the logo, and look forward to seeing what events the committee comes up with.

The logo is attractive and I certainly would consider Great Britten one of the US’s best friends… But, during the war of 1812 they were the “enemy” weren’t they? It just seems a little odd to have the union jack so prominently displayed right next to the stars and stripes. This logo makes it look like they were allies.
Just my perception.

The United Kingdom was our enemy during the war of 1812. We were fighting to get the UK out of our country. Now the country is one of our staunchest allies. I served in Iraq with British Troops and they were the most highly trained troops and knew how to interact with the local population. The British flag stands for the same values that the USA stands for. But in the War of 1812….we were bitter enemies.

I sure hope Jack can have his snow cone truck there. It wouldn’t be a party without someone breaking the law!

Maybe the county council can give Havre de Grace a “LOAN” and not make the city pay it back. It does that for the private sector and they had a 661 million dollar profit. Or even better……..charge fees for putting the logo on the police and fire trucks…this could generate awareness and maybe some needed money. You have the right to stop in the name of the 1813 war.
