From the City of Havre de Grace’s Office of Tourism and Marketing:
Havre de Grace’s DPW fulfilled the Resolution passed by Mayor and Council of the City of Havre de Grace allowing the official U.S. Flag from the War of 1812, also known as the 15 star and 15 stripe flag to be at all municipal flag locations throughout the City. The 15 star flag became the Official United States Flag on May 1, 1795. Two stars and two stripes were added for the admission of Vermont (14th state) and Kentucky (15th state). This was the official US Flag for 23 years with 5 Presidents serving under it which included, Presidents Washington, Adams, Jefferson, Madison, and Monroe. It will remain flying until December 2014.
The Bicentennial of the City’s involvement of the War of 1812 plays a significant role in the State of Maryland’s Chesapeake Campaign to take place this spring. The City is gearing up for a three day festival the first weekend in May. This is an exciting time for our City to commemorate the War of 1812 and explore our history. The War of 1812 has been known as the forgotten war and with new exhibits at each Museum, wayside signage being placed on the promenade and at our attractions, and traveling trunks accessible for our schools the story of Havre de Grace will be remembered.
