Harford County Harvest for the Hungry Campaign Kicks Off

The Harford Community Action Agency and Harford County Government are once again spearheading the Harford County “Harvest for the Hungry” campaign March 2 through March 9, 2013. Now in its 27th year, the Harvest for the Hungry week-long food drive helps restock the shelves of local food pantries that have been depleted over the holiday season.

Regional partners include the U.S. Postal Service, Girl Scouts of Central Maryland, Safeway, The Baltimore Sun and WBAL. Harford Community Action Agency receives food collected for use in their Food Pantry and for distribution to other Harford County organizations.

Those wishing to donate, may place nonperishable food donations by a mailbox for letter carriers to collect or donations may be dropped off at local post offices, any branch of the Harford County Public Library, or the lobby of the Harford County Administration Building at 220 S. Main Street in Bel Air. Harford County Government participates by holding a food drive competition among its offices and employees.

Additionally, numerous local churches participate by collecting food and/or publicizing the effort and a number of local farms pledge a donation of produce from their upcoming growing season. New local participants this year include The Garrison Command at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Harford County branches of Bank of America, Boyle Buick GMC Truck, and the Harford County Public Library.

Founder Larry Adam of Fallston states “hunger takes no holiday,” and created Harvest for the Hungry as a volunteer effort that strives to collect enough food to supply those Marylanders in need throughout the year. The Harford Community Action Agency receives the bulk of the food collected in Harford County for distribution to those in need. Currently the Harford Community Action Agency helps more than 800 families each month. Families can receive food support from the HCAA once every 30 days.
