Dr. Alan Taylor to Speak at Harford Community College on Role of African-Americans in War of 1812

The Hays-Heighe House at Harford Community College will welcome Dr. Alan Taylor on Monday, April 8 as part of the College’s commemoration of the Bicentennial of the War of 1812. Dr. Taylor will offer a public lecture at the Chesapeake Center at 10 a.m. His talk, “The Internal Enemy: Freedom, Slavery, and War,” will focus on the roles of African Americans in what scholars have called the second American revolution.

The lecture, which is open to all, is a part of a day-long workshop for museums and historic sites in the mid-Atlantic region entitled Humanizing the War of 1812: Telling the Untold Stories Along the Star-Spangled Banner National Historic Trail. It is sponsored by the National Park Service War of 1812 National Historic Trail and the Maryland Historical Trust. The Hays-Heighe House is a partner with the Park Service and the Trust developing special programming to commemorate the bicentennial.

Dr. Taylor, professor of history at University of California, Davis and a Pulitzer Prize winning author, will be available to sign copies of his books following his presentation. The morning program will also feature staff from the Historic Annapolis Foundation presenting a short re-enactment and discussion of Maryland slave life in the early 19th century.
