From the Maryland State Police:
(Bel Air, MD) – Maryland State Police investigators charged a 30-year-old Bel Air man with armed robbery on Saturday in connection with the heist of the Sunoco gas station in the 1400 block of Rock Springs Road.
Luke Raymond Johnson of the 800 block of Chesney Lane, Bel Air, was also charged with first- and second-degree assault, theft under $1,000 and drug violations. He was remanded to the Harford County Detention Center in lieu of a $250,000 bond Sunday morning.
Johnson was taken into custody by MSP Criminal Enforcement Division investigators and uniformed troopers from Bel Air Barrack shortly after the 1:30 p.m. robbery.
Troopers were called to the Sunoco gas station after the clerk reported a male entered the establishment and demanded cash. When the clerk momentarily hesitated, the perpetrator pulled a box cutter-style knife from his pants pocket and threatened the clerk with the weapon. The suspect fled the store on foot; he was observed wearing gray jogging pants, a dark sweatshirt and white cloth covering his face. Upon the arrival of the Maryland State Police, several witnesses told troopers they observed a male subject flee the store and drive away in a van featuring the placard displaying a construction firm’s name.
Investigators researched the construction firm and subsequently spoke with company representatives, who provide employee information and the possible whereabouts for the company’s vehicle. Troopers responded to 800 block of Chesney Lane, where they found Johnson dressed in the clothing described by the store clerk. He was taken into custody without incident. During the investigation, troopers recovered drug paraphernalia containing suspected heroin and a knife described by the clerk.
