I see so many people walking and riding their bikes in this area. I live in this area and there is no safe way to get from one side of RT 40 to the other. The options are to cross over the overpass where the shoulder runs out and walk in traffic or run across Rt 40 right where the speed limit goes up. The last option is to go down to the train station and cross over there. For the people who live on the other side of Rt 22 it’s ridiculous to expect them to walk that far down and back up just to cross a few hundred feet. This is so sad.

It’s an issue the town of Aberdeen needs to address. Too many good business on the both sides of the street and people attempting to cross, the cross lanes are too narrow for cars and they stick out into traffic. Too much going on at intersections – left, right, straight and people without proper lights or signs. Speed limit is too high and cars driving faster than limit. Can’t expect people who live or work in Aberdeen to always to take a car to cross a street.
WTF? says
What businesses do you speak of that cater to pedestrian traffic at the location the individual was struck? Route
40 and beards hill road. Besides 1 or 2, that area looks pretty desolate to me, it seems if you wanted to walk somewhere it would take a person a good while to get somewhere.
Inside Aberdeen on route 40 the speed limit is 30mph,where pedestrian traffic is dense, how much slower would you like it?
What intersections? There is one traffic light at west bel air road and route 40.
Eve says
It may look may look desolate to you but I can assure you that it is not. On both sides are many houses, town homes, and/or apartments. On one side is a skate park, and a few factories. I don’t know where this unfortunate person was going or coming back from. I’ve never crossed there because I ride my bike across the 22 overpass in traffic. According to the maryland bike safety laws I have to ride in the center of lane as there is no shoulder only a turn lane. The speed limit is 50 mph. Scares the daylights out of me everytime I have to do it. I can honestly see a pedestrian choosing to cross Rt. 40 as the safer route. One of my neighbors is wheelchair bound and I see the family (her and her children) walking on the shoulder of 22 and down to Rt 40 towards WaWa. That shoulder disappears and becomes a turn lane. I imagine they aren’t doing this for fun and one day I fear I’ll read a report similar to this one about one of them. I’ve seen a lot of housing built in this area and other areas like Rt 7. There are sidewalks in the development but none leading out. A CHILD died outside of one of those new communities. It’s becoming to common to hear about a pedestrian who has died in Aberdeen.

What factories, townhomes and apartments? Name the businesses and residential areas or your comments are useless. North Deen is nowhere near pedestrian traffic where the individual was hit, nor are the warehouses across Amtrak, you aren’t even allowed to cross Amtrak to.get to them, stop using emotional legislation to prove your point.

People without proper lights and signs? What does that mean? People only forget to turn their turn signal on in Aberdeen?
Sounds like most of your reply was the typical “blame everything else but the problem itself.” How about vigilant traffic safety when walking on a highway?
INDEPENDENT says
I think the Aberdeen Police Department does a good job in enforcement of traffic on Route 40. The area would appear to be in a 40 mile per hour zone where this person was struck. How about people stay off of highway or at least walk on the shoulder…or here’s an idea, look before you cross and wait to clear.
Eve says
I agree that the Aberdeen Police are very good at stopping speeders on Rt 40. Why are you assuming that the pedestrian wasn’t looking before crossing the street? I doubt he was strolling down the middle of the road. If there is a shoulder I’m sure that’s where he was walking until he tried to cross. As far as “staying off the highway”, people live and work there and may not have the means to be driving everywhere. On the flip side the driver may not have been able to see him in time. Even a 40 mph it can be hard.
cant read? says
Uhh… Route 40 and beards hill is right on the out skirts of Aberdeen city limits, its.before you get to the route 22 bridge. It’s not “in town,” nor are there “many businesses” in the area the individual got struck by the vehicle. Perhaps know your geography and location before commenting.
The speed limit goes from route 40 norm of 55mph, down to 30 as you pass the wawa, then back up to 40 near the golden corral.
Eve says
Can’t read, it is in fact still within town limits and close to many jobs and homes. He was struck on the east bound side of Rt 40. The speed limit increases and cars are merging off the ramp from 22. Are you suggesting that if it had been “out of town limits” than it would be fine that someone died? Try contributing to the conversation rather then “correcting” Lyn.

There is minimal business and homes in the area the pedestrian was struck, stop lying.

THE ONLY THING I “SUGGEST” IS FOR YOU TO STOP COMMENTING.
john cordner says
Wow eve, you got a serious problem. No one is suggesting anything, can’t read was correcting geography and incorrect speed limit assumptions.
FRucking LOL says
Why does the location of the collision matter?
Pro tip: don’t walk on a highway at 4:50am, excercise extreme traffic vigilence and wear reflective vest if you do.
People get into accidents everywhere, wake up, and pay attention.
P.S. I find it odd that eve says “if there is a shoulder” then comments on how well they think they know the area with all those businesses and homes. What business in that area is open at 5am? WaWa?
