The Forgotten War Special Commemoration to be Held at Bel Air Library on Saturday

Harford County Public Library is pleased to bring a special event to Harford County in commemoration of the anniversary of the end of the Korean War. Join us at the Bel Air Library on June 22 from 2pm to 4pm for an opening reception with refreshments for the exhibition GIs and the Kids followed by The Forgotten War: Veterans Panel Discussion which brings together veterans who lived and fought through the Korean War.

GIs and the Kids is a photo exhibition that tells the story of how American soldiers helped save the lives of thousands of orphaned Korean children during the Korean War. Created by The Korean War Children’s Memorial Project, this moving experience will be displayed at the Bel Air Library, June 21 through July 27, 2013. The exhibition explores an under-appreciated aspect of what has already been deemed the “Forgotten War.” With the 60th Anniversary of the end of hostilities, and more than a decade into another war, it is important to remember the sacrifices Americans have made, as well as the humanity our soldiers display. This exhibition is an example of the best of the American soldier. Artifacts loaned by community members, including children’s hanbok (traditional Korean clothing) and a Korean War Army uniform complete with combat boots, will also be on display.

The Forgotten War discussion will be moderated by WAMD’s Harford’s Edge host Cindy Mumby and includes two authors of Korean War memoirs, Bill Alli and Vincent Krepps and the veteran who worked behind the scenes on this commemoration project, Robert Banker. Korea is called the “Forgotten War” due to its placement in history – wedged between the glory of WWII and the nationally contentious Vietnam War. However, the Korean War’s lasting legacy includes assisting the country to become a democratic global force, with the 15th-largest economy in the world. Panelists will talk about their differing experiences and take questions from the audience.
