From the New Harford Democratic Club:
Meeting Reminder
Wednesday August 07, 2013 – 7:00pm
* Aberdeen Holiday Inn*
1007 Beards Hill Rd
Aberdeen, MD 21001
President Helton will present a discussion on Jon Meachum’s book, Thomas Jefferson: The Art of Power. “The Pulitzer Prize-winning author of American Lion and Franklin and Winston brings vividly to life an extraordinary man and his remarkable times. Thomas Jefferson: The Art of Power gives us Jefferson the politician and president, a great and complex human being forever engaged in the wars of his era. Philosophers think; politicians maneuver. Jefferson’s genius was that he was both and could do both, often simultaneously…”
Patrick Henry says
Democrats getting together to discuss Jefferson. That’s rich.
TPP says
But the founding fathers are all a bunch of racists and radical extremists! (sarcasm)
Shouldn’t they be discussing their idols such as Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, Castro, Guevara, Chavez, etc?
K says
That’s exactly what I was thinking Patrick. I’m just finishing up the Meachum’s book on Jefferson. Why Democrats would ever discuss Jeffersonian Republicanism is beyond me. Maybe they’ve seen the error of their ways and have cleared the cobwebs out of their gray matter. Whatever the case, it’s kind of interesting that this group is having a book discussion (a good thing) and that the selected reading material is about a hardcore Republican – a true believer in less government and more personal responsibility!
Patrick Henry says
I’m not holding my breath…
Mr. Moderate says
Please read the history of the formation of the Democratic Party (common people vs Hamilton’s plutocracy). Then study the history of Jefferson’s presidential administration, and TJ’s use of Hamiltonian means (strong federal power) to affect Jeffersonian ends ( interests of the workers,
farmers, mechanics, shop keepers, etc.).
I am always concerned, nonetheless, with anything associated with Art Helton.
K says
Hamilton was never president. I’m well aware he was the first Treasury Secretary. He was also a Federalist. Jefferson disliked Hamilton immensely. As President, Jefferson did encounter situations that called for the use of whatever means necessary as to maintain liberty without monarchical control for all Americans.
Mr. Moderate says
I thought the right favored original, “strict,” interpretation of the Constitution. Jefferson, a pragmatist rather than an ideologue, “liberally” made use of “Loose construction” of the
Constitution (e.g.’s, he kept the bank, signed the law creating a national road, approved the US government’s purchase of Louisiana, etc.), Saul K. Padover asserts that Jefferson as president was “consistently inconsistent”–which is the hallmark of a “doer” not the consistently nay-saying folks such as Andy Harris, et. al. This is the sort of policy approach that Bill Clinton utilized and that drove Republicans crazy!
Jaguar Judy says
Well this should be an extremely short meeting. I actually didn’t know Democrats could read. They passed Obamacare without reading it. And Art Helton is going to lead the discussion about Jefferson? Who is going to help him?
Freestate? says
You do have to wonder just what this discussion will sound like. Modern Democrats (socialists) discussing a man who as much as any was instrumental in creating a new nation based on individual freedom and limited government.
Grand Pooobaaah says
So living in a Republican Plutocracy would mean more individual freedom and limited government? Where you born after the 80’s or something? Most of the recent governmental intrusions on individual freedom have been due to policies set in place during the Reagan Age and the two Bush’s reign of Evil. The Drug War, the Patriot Act, etc… has destroyed the foundations of this democracy and I fear our country will never recover due to the Republican Tea Baggers in Congress.
PROUD TO BE LIBERAL says
“If a nation expects to be ignorant and free,
in a state of civilization,
it expects what never was and never will be.” Thomas Jefferson
B says
I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them.
W.T.F.? says
If “Club President” – “Senator” Arthur Henry Helton is the presenter, then it can’t be worth attending.
Most everything he says is a lie AND most everything he does is for self promotion and self gratification.
Why can’t this perpetual loser just masturbate in private?
Justin A. Glimmer says
Hey, wake up “K”, Thomas Jefferson was NOT a Republican.
If you believe that he was, then (because of his beliefs and actions) Lincoln was a Democrat!
Patrick Henry says
Justin,
Did you mean because he suspended habeas corpus and detained state legislators with whom he disagreed in Maryland? Yes, I guess that would make him more akin to modern Democrats.
ALEX R says
Well Lincoln did free the slaves even though the Democratic Party wanted to keep them in chains. Maybe they could discuss that next month.
Grand Pooobaaah says
That was then, this is now. The current political state is the Democrats are mostly minorities and a few whites that believe in equality for all. The Republicans have become a bigoted group of racists that believe in dollars buy equality. The actions of republicans in Ohio during the last election, was the most despicable display of suppression of voting rights in years. The tactics of the Republican party have become aggressive and borderline illegal. Like it or not, Democrats have become the party of majority minorities and the Republicans have become the party of fear and hatred motivated by greed and racism.
TPP says
You must have forgotten it’s the democrats who ran the KKK, Jim Crow laws, poll taxes, and gun control against blacks. Oh wait that doesn’t fit your narrative does it? Quit drinking the MSNBC koolaid.
The fact is both parties are a joke and stand for big government. They both destroy the constitution, expand the empire, rack up national debt, continue the same policies of the status quo and further progress us toward a police state. Look at how many civil liberties we have lost in the past 20 or 30 years. More specifically in the last 10 or 12 under both Bush and Obama.
Disgusted says
Your ignorance of what the parties stood for at the time shines through. The democrats of the 1800’s are today’s republicans… only difference is the name didn’t change. Now run along or you will be late for your Klan meeting.
Because says
Lincoln was a moderate Republican interested in preserving the Union. And one of your local boys killed him after the war was over out of spite. Things really haven’t changed.
K says
Maybe if you read the book that Mr. Helton will be discussing you’d know your statement is 100% WRONG, Justin. Andrew Jackson was a big well known Democrat. It’s wonderful to include one’s self in a conversation only if a converse has accurate knowledge of what one writes/speaks.
Common Sense says
It is clear that Jefferson was a Republican and believed in a states rights and wanted a weak federal government.
What the Democrats have become is Progressive/Liberal Democrats who have embraced a socialist ideology.
So modern Democrats are not Jeffersonian in any way.
A donkey has a big what? says
I wonder why I see all the Art Helton Chevy advertisement trucks are at and below the dividing line that forms from I95?
Haven’t seen them in the “north”
