Harford County Human Relations Commission Observes National Hispanic Heritage Month

The Harford County Human Relations Commission is recognizing National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15. The national observation celebrates the history, culture and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central and South America.

The recognition began in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson. President Ronald Reagan expanded the program in 1988 to cover a 30 day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988.

“This is a time to support citizens of all cultures and recognize their contributions,” said Beth Hendrix, Director of the Department of Community Services.

The Harford County Human Relations Commission is a 15 member volunteer advisory board appointed by the County Executive with the approval of the County Council. Members serve with the County Executive representing all segments of the County’s population.
