The Susquehanna Workforce Network, Inc., (SWN) in partnership with the Sharon Ann Grose Education Group placed 20 youth in a Summer Work Experience. The youth who are all over 18 were placed with 22 different Harford County employers for a 5 week, thirty hour per week work experience. All of the youth participating in this work experience are currently enrolled in Harford County Public School’s Reconnecting Youth Program or Harford Community College’s Certificate to Career in a Year Program.
The Susquehanna Workforce Network Inc. paid each youth in the program $8.00 per hour for their work time. Additionally, youth learned about what it takes to be successful in the workplace. They were able to explore different types of jobs, scheduling and being on time, workplace etiquette and dressing appropriately for the environment. Some youth started the work experience as early as July 1, and some will work as late as September 30.
Dustin Hutton, a youth working with Adams Chevrolet in Havre de Grace, said, “The program is incredible, I never knew that anything like this existed.” Brianna Morris, a youth working with Cani Optical in Aberdeen, said that she has learned a lot, especially that she enjoys data entry. Eric Brown, a youth employed with Cani Optical in Aberdeen is learning what types of work he enjoys and what types of work he would like to avoid in his career. Employers feel that the program has been beneficial to them as well. The youth have contributed to getting things done in their workplaces.
The Summer Youth Work Experience has been a wonderful experience for many youth and businesses throughout Harford County. Susquehanna Workforce Network, Inc. will continue offering interesting, educational and inventive programs to meet the needs of job seekers throughout the region.

Great article! As a teacher, I find this information very useful. Are there any of these types of programs in Baltimore County? Ones I have followed have been terminated due to the State budget cuts.
