Drug Take Back Tuesdays: Harford County Sheriff’s Office Launches Monthly Program to Return Unused Prescription Medications

From the Harford County Sheriff’s Office:

In an effort to provide regularly scheduled and convenient times for citizens to turn in unused or expired prescription medications the Sheriff’s Office has launched a new initiative to make it easier for residents to drop of old medications and at the same time discuss any community problems or issues with deputies. The new program, Take Back Tuesday, was designed and will be coordinated by the Sheriff’s Office Community Policing Unit. They will partner with a local volunteer fire company on one Tuesday each month from 5pm- 8pm.

Sgt. Kevin Thomas, Supervisor of the Sheriff’s Office Community Policing Unit (CPU), said, “Volunteer fire companies are central to many of our local communities and are convenient locations for the public to visit and dispose of unwanted prescription and over-the-counter medications in a safe and eco-friendly manner. It also allows the Mobile Crime Prevention Outreach Office to be visible in the community and CPU personnel an opportunity to speak with the public on a variety of crime prevention topics”. Additionally, Thomas explained, the CPU now offers photo ID’s for children so that their parents are better prepared to quickly provide descriptive information to law enforcement, in the event their child is lost or abducted.

Thomas said he is hopeful this new initiative will be successful. “We already know that when we randomly schedule drug take backs people dispose of hundreds of pounds of old medications,” Thomas said, noting that we’re surprised when we learn how far they drove to make the drop, or how many say they wish we could locate in their community. “We know citizens want to do the responsible thing and dispose of these old and unused medications. We want to help them by making it easier and more convenient, Thomas explained. “And of course an added benefit, Thomas says, we’re protecting the environment and the public has the opportunity to meet and discuss any crime prevention or law enforcement issue with a deputy”.
