From the Harford County Sheriff’s Office:
Harford County Sheriff’s deputies have arrested and charged a 13 year old juvenile male with burglary after he was identified breaking into an Abingdon home. Police believe he is also related to a second burglary that occurred in the same community just several hours earlier.
On Sunday January 12th, at 8:55am deputies were dispatched to the 200 block of Laurentum Parkway in Abingdon for a report of burglary. Deputies responded and made contact with the victim. The homeowner reported her neighbor called and told her a black male wearing a red and black plaid jacket and a dark knit enter her home through a rear door. Responding deputies canvassed the area and located a juvenile black male a short distance away. The suspect was subsequently identified by witnesses as the person seen entering the victim’s home. The 13 year old was taken into custody and charged with burglary. He was subsequently detained by the Department of Juvenile Services.
Earlier in the morning in the same community deputies responded to the 800 block of Tiffany Trail, in Abingdon for a burglary in progress. At approximately 3am police received a 911 call reporting the burglary and that the suspect was still inside the residence. The suspect, however, fled just prior to deputies’ arrival. The homeowners awoke to find a black male suspect in their bedroom. The suspect then left the bedroom and fled the home. An undisclosed amount of cash was taken and no injuries were reported. Both homes are in the same community and detectives are looking at the 13 year old as a possible suspect.

With all of this going on in my neighborhood I’m glad my husband taught me good aim. I have 2 little ones at home while he is overseas. I do not care how old you are. If you break in my home in the middle of the night you will not leave alive.

hats off to the deputies who responded and caught the offenders. shame is, these juvenile perps will receive a virtual slap on the wrist, with perhaps a stint in “joovie”, and be right back out on the streets. next time the stalwart men and women of the HCSD catch them they will be of age and finally end up in the slam. odds are these offenders are no doubt being financed by the welfare system: free rent, free school lunch, free medical, free cellphone etc.etc. the only bright spot here is the effective response by the deputies, and the vigilance of neighbors to chose to get involved.

er, edit: neighbors ‘who’ chose to get involved.

Now now fatboy…the last time I responded with a similar wonderment, I was accused of being racist (as if that has anything to do with it – it doesn’t), and a recipient of said benefits since I know so much about them (just doing my job).
I do agree with you. Crimes like this don’t usually start at this level, and involve a lotof variables. Sometimes the parents are not parenting and sometimes they have done everything possible. The fact that DJS detained this kid speaks volumes, esp since policy dictates the level of infraction and other factors in whether a child is detained. Unfortunately, he is now with all kind of youth offenders, learning new skills to add to his repertoire.

Remember the old saying : when seconds count the police are minutes away? The criminal was in the citizens bedroom and had time to flee before the police even got there. The homeowners are lucky the thug didn’t shoot, stab or club them. Of course In the great state of MD the politicians (and the morons who keep electing them) would expect the homeowners to RETREAT under the bed to avoid a confrontation. Just another day in Moscow by the bay.
Jim says
Do you expect the police to be outside the home? It doesn’t take very long to walk down one flight of stairs and leave.
WTF says
No, Sorry, not running out of MY HOUSE when someone else is in there. Come in my bedroom at night you wont leave. You guys can go run and hide, and continue to be victims.
Hank says
I think Jim was meaning that it didn’t take the punk long to go down the stairs and flee the residence before police arrived.

This young comrade was not stealing. Your personal property does not belong to you. It is the peoples property and this young revolutionary was only accessing what is rightfully ours. It brings me joyous emotions that the principals I have set forth are being so readily accepted by the young labor movement. Again Thanks to comrades like Mr Burbey the revolution is growing! For the people!
HYDESMANN says
Jim, you make my point exactly. The police cannot protect you, they mostly investigate crimes after they have been committed. It is up to the individual, a right and responsibility, to defend his life and property. Anyone who tries to take away that right, by law or by force should be voted out of office or at least be made to live in PG or Montgomery Co.
Hank says
Which is a sentiment that most police officers share.
It’s pretty rare for an officer to actually prevent a specific crime or even interrupt one in progress. There are only a handful of officers working at any given time and there are thousands of criminals and potential victims in Harford County. The police can’t be everywhere at all times, nor would I want to live in a society where the police are everywhere at all times.
It is up to the individual citizen to protect themselves and their property. And by that I don’t mean go shoot anyone walking across your lawn or touching your car door handle. Be aware of your surroundings, lock your cars up and don’t leave valuables in your cars (including car keys….), lock your home’s doors and windows (and don’t install a damn doggie door…that’s just asking for some skinny crackhead to slither in), and as a last resort be prepared to do whatever you have to do to protect yourself and your family.
Many criminals aren’t overly intelligent (book smarts anyway….most of them have plenty of street smarts), but they’re usually smart enough to commit crimes when the police aren’t right there.
