Robert S. Wagner, former Harford County Councilman & Council President has filed as a Republican candidate for election to the office of Harford County Council President.
Wagner says he has observed an overall disconnect between our county Government and the people whom it serves. “There has been a lack of accountability and oversight by our Council and there is a need to make our local Government more responsible. I look forward to the challenges ahead and embrace the opportunity to serve the people of Harford County over the next four years.”
Wagner is a 56 year old lifetime resident of Harford County. He served as Councilman from 1990-2002 and as Council President from 2002-2006.
Early voting will take place June 12-19, 2014 with the Primary Election date being June 24, 2014. Robert S. Wagner will be on the ballot for the Republican Primary Election.
With all due respect, it is time for a fresh new perspectives from folks who will be effective leaders, with integrity to represent the interests of county citizens with no development interests or associations.
Can anyone without connections to the development interests or associations get elected in Harford County? Can anyone tell me who on the County Council is not connected to the development group?
I think that it would be a long shot for a person without development connections to get elected in Harford but don’t worry, the developers would probably own them within a month of the election anyway.
It’s like a cabal – these guys. I wonder sometimes if there’s just so much money involved that the entire election thing is kabookie. Very easy to manipulate and smear someone until they seem unelectible. The “liberal” card is pulled here and everybody pounces even though political leanings mean almost nothing to the process. It’s our fault – we need to see past this game and take the county back.

question is…did he do a good job while in office?…his ‘brush with the law’ aside, did he do a good job for the citizens of the county?…that’s really all that matters as to whether or not you vote for Mr. Wagner. His ‘brush with the law’ was a far cry from criminal…he took his medicine.
far cry from criminal? If it was a far cry…….why was he brought before a judge? The saying is i forgive you……but it doesn’t mean forget. Society is so forgiving and yes people need a second chance, but when people say I forgive you and you have paid your debt to society. Yes, but that doesn’t mean forget it. Personally I have nothing against the guy.
Just love when the justice system gives politician special treatment. They bring in a visiting judge and say the state has a conflict of interest. And now after so many years, the politician wants to come back and become county council president……..I’m thinking that most people are smart enough to remember and not sweep under the rug.

What makes you think that he wouldn’t be a good model for county residents. Don’t worry about his past…..He learned from his big mistake and paid his debt to society. It’s not a habit of mine to judge people based on their mistakes. I base my opinion of him on his past work history and he did a good job in the past. He’s not perfect nor is anyone else.

I am glad to see that no one especially someone that is running for elected office is allowed to make a mistake. How many of you know when that happened? It was 8 years ago. How many people get arrested for DUI or DWI every day. I guess that none of them should be allowed to accomplish anything for rest of their lives and they should be ridiculed for their mistake no matter how long ago it happened. Yes he made a mistake, he paid for his mistake so he should be allowed to move on with his life without ridicule. To the above contributors, do you even know whether or not he still consumes alcohol or did the situation that happened years ago help him to stop drinking. You do not know, but I know for a fact that Mr. Wagner has not had a drink since that situation happened. Instead of criticizing him, take a moment and look what kind of job that he did while he was on the council. We need change, we need someone who has business experience, we need some one who understands the operation of the council and has budgetary knowledge. We do not need Mr. Slutsky another career educator as Council President. We all see what we got with Mr. Craig as County Executive. And we will certainly need someone who will keep checks and balance on our possible new County Executive (MR. Glassman), because he certainly does not the experience or knowledge to do the job. As I said earlier we need change, we criticize the ones that want to come in and support change and say nothing about what has happened and is happening to our county by the ones in elected office now. If you always do what you always did then always get what you always got.
He ain’t gonna win………..there are plenty of other qualified people out there who haven’t made that mistake. I for one, will be voting for someone else and I would do the same thing for someone who did something that I didn’t approve of. How many politicians would you like in office if they went in front of a judge. The voters have spoken and voted him out of office. So to say that he made a mistake and we shouldn’t hold that against him is being moot. Any Harford County resident, who is eligible, can file to run for county council president. Doesn’t mean they are going to get elected. I am sure all these people on here are Wagner supporters and I will get this hidden. My vote does count and I am not going to waste it on someone who has no chance of being elected.
I totally disagree with you. You need to look at a candidate’s work experience. That’s what is the most important factor in this whole issue.
Wow we must have a lot of perfect people in Harford County! Because there sure are a lot of stones being thrown here. Whoever said it was “swept under the rug” – if it were truly swept under the rug Wagner would have never been arrested he would’ve been escorted home and this would’ve never made media headlines unless someone wanted to exploit him. A lot of public figures have issues and their pasts so did celebrities, rock stars , sporting icons and we love them! I can agree don’t forget, but forgive and let’s move on. In my opinion all politicians tell you they want to do the best all we can do as voters is try choose the best person for the job and I don’t think the candidates personal past have any merit on the job they will do to serve the community. Wagner did a fine job and was conservative as he said the first go around and I believe what he says is true we do need someone more conservative at the head of the Council – he has my vote!
The problem with society is that celebrities, sports figures, and rock stars get too much press and what about the service member fighting overseas for our freedoms. Yes, Wagoner has the right to file for council president, but this topic will come up every time. I know people make mistakes, but those mistakes will come back to the public’s eye when someone does something like this. It all depends on how he handles it. By stepping up and talking about the issue and not trying to hide it. I for one would find that way honorable instead of saying it was a mistake or everyone has a past. I have fought for this country in war and been in during peacetime, but it amazes me how many people downplay serious issues by saying they don’t judge. Step up and face the issue and stop calling it a mistake. A mistake is grabbing the wrong set of car keys and trying to start your car.

The voters of Harford County did not return him to the Council for other reasons.
I am sure engineer has a good point. He was not returned for other reasons. He got in trouble with the law and paid his debt to society, but he still got in trouble. I have been on this earth for a long time and have never gotten pulled over and charged with what he was charged with. There are some things that cause problems in people’s lives, but to say I am not one to judge is bull. There are a lot of people that I would not even associate with because of being in the legal system. Just look at Maryland Judicial Case Search and see the number of people who have done bad things. I was never a fan of his and didn’t vote for him last time. It amazes me how many pontificate on here and say…I am not going to judge him…….Don’t we do that when someone does something wrong. We need more people on the council like Joe. He is honest and he stops to talk to people as people. Never have a bad word to say about him.

He was framed. Didn’t do it. He did an outstanding job in office, but someone didn’t like his policies and was stopped by a mystery person (can’t use man because that would be sexiest) LOL He was the best thing since beer bread.
He has no chance of winning and neither does a certain person for another higher office. Love these people who think they know best for harford county, but end up making empty promises. What about all the county workers who need pay raises and other people get a free education.
Wagner supporters – please do tell. Name 5 things he did to make Harford County a better place to live. He was on the council for 16 years – surely there must be some noteworthy accomplishments that can be attributed to him. Help me to change my opinion of the man, because all that I remember was a pompous, sloppy drunk who did nothing.
gave himself a good retirement. Sixteen years and bet he gets a better retirement then the average county worker. Makes me chuckle when people say what this politician has done for the county. First rule…..get retirement with benefits……Second rule……get retirement benefits……

Went through two comprehensive zonings voting to hold the development envelope to strict boundaries along with holding extensions on water and sewer.
Helped stop the Gravel Hill Rubble fill
Defeated the Philips Airfield along with the Airport Authority
Voted against Council member pay increases
Consistently voted against tax increases
Supported Educational Priorities when they were justified. Ex: Beginning of Bel Air High school rebuild
Voted against the expansion of Spencer’s Rubble fill and help stop the county from purchasing the entire parcel.

Voter says: well unfortunately people tend to believe everything they read and hear. They are just part of the herd following the wolf in sheep’s clothing. If humanity would learn to discern things for themselves there might be less finger pointing and more cooperation. The point here is that unless you were there and know the exact events of the night, you have no merit to stand on. Mr. Wagner’s career in the government can stand on it’s own up against anyone else. It is time we return to a time of real Statesmen and moral citizens that care, not point fingers and offer no solutions. Mr. Wagner has my vote and I will do my part to help see his campaign go as far as it can. I see him getting the victory!

I found Mr Wagner to be arrogant, self-entitled and unprofessional. I won’t be voting for him. Harford County sorely needs fresh new ideas and a higher level of professionalism than we have settled for in the past with many of our elected officials.
I don’t think you want to give a guy like Wagner more power and influence. His wife was involved in a scandal where she received interview questions for a county job she was applying for prior to the interview. After getting caught, fired and rehired with a new position at the tourism office, decides to sue the county for more money. That’s disgusting! Are voters forgetting we had to hire and pay for outside counsel for this suit? Where’s the ownership for doing something you shouldn’t have been doing, it’s cheating. And that was less than two years ago. I hope Robert Wagner has received treatment for his addiction but look how well second chances worked for Mimi Cooper? We need a loyal and reliable candidate that actually cares about Harford county and not the politics, affluence and money that these people so desperately seek!
He is our hope to stop evamar, we don’t care about his history his wife or what he would do to the rest of the county as long as he saves us.
