The Harford County Sheriff’s Office is urging Abingdon residents to secure their vehicles and remove any valuables from view following a spate of recent thefts from unlocked vehicles and at least one break-in.
Earlier this week, deputies responded to a string of 15 unlawful entries into cars parked at residences off Singer Road just west of Tollgate Road. According to Sheriff’s Office spokesman Lt. Michael Crabbs, the thefts occurred between the hours of 11 p.m. and 4 a.m.; various items were taken, including small electronic devices.
“Whoever’s doing it is walking up and down the street trying door handles,” Crabbs said. “Most of the cars are unlocked.”
Crabbs urged residents to both hide or remove any valuable items and lock their cars. Also, he encouraged residents who spot suspicious persons to contact the Harford County Sheriff’s Office.
“We’d much rather you call and let us check them out and determine if they have legitimate business in the area,” he said.

Instead of calling, how about more frequent patrols in the area?

We all know that would help but good luck getting it. The party line is either that there aren’t enough police to go around or that they’re too busy handling more serious crimes. Just make sure that you lock your doors. The car companies even make it easier for you. If you have a newer vehicle, one click and all of the doors are locked. Almost all of my vehicles have been broken into and one was stolen, which is bad enough because they didn’t get anything valuable. But why make it easy for the criminals? Make them work for it and hopefully someone will catch them in the act and call the police.
