It was exciting to see the new Bel Air High School from the inside, and this was an occasion to see and ‘listen up’ the new auditorium. Right off, the acoustics are fantastic, plenty of leg room and beautifully appointed.
The reason for my visit Sunday afternoon was prompted by a member of the band filling me in on the concert and the need to get away from the massive cleanup resulting from the winds and rains recently.
The Bel Air Community Band presented a benefit concert for “Band Together” an instrument donation program. The Band Together program is for school kids who can’t afford to rent or buy an musical instrument but want to learn.
Band Together accepts both used instruments and monetary donations for the furtherment of folks who enjoy creating music.
The band consists of approximately 80 musicians even though it looked much larger on the ...Continue Reading
Each year, more than 7,000 secondary student musicians from public and private schools in all Maryland subdivisions audition for the Maryland All-State Bands, Orchestras, and Choruses sponsored by the Maryland Music Educators Association. Students take part in a competitive audition and their musical talent is judged by experts in their field. Those selected represent the best among Maryland’s middle and high school student musicians.
For the 2009-10 school year, a total of 50 Harford County Public School student musicians were selected as members of the Maryland All-State Junior Chorus; the Maryland All-State Senior Band, Senior Jazz Band and Senior Orchestra; and the Maryland All-State Senior Women’s Chorus and Senior Mixed Chorus.

Let’s start out by stating I know little about Johnny Winter…he’s a blues guitar player who greased his skids by emulating the masters…B.B. King, Sonny Boy Williamson III, Robert Johnson, and Lightnin’ Hopkins. Hearing the blues is a magic art of soulful appreciation and, among the pantheon of blues players, Mr. Winter has always stood tall.
A proud Texan, Johnny Winter wasn’t just a copycat of the blues, and listening to his music, well it’s just some of the finest guitar work ever. You know what it’s like to hear and see music on television and radio, and like it, but never witness it in concert. That’s where it was for me and Johnny Winter. I had never gotten the chance to see the guitar slinger in person and tonight was my chance.
Early nineties. Late teens. The time in life where you’re just starting to figure out that you can go places and do things; that you have limitless options. The idea both terrified and exhilarated you. And, you’re a punk.
One of your bands was playing in DC. The Red Hot Chili Peppers. You got tickets for you and your 15-year-old girlfriend. Her parents wouldn’t let her drive to DC with you, so they drove her and her friends and you met there. You went with your friends. You’d never driven all the way into DC before.
First person. We got to the show and had to wait outside. This was before I realized that rock shows never start on time, so the only people in line were the other punk kids who had also not realized this. And my beautiful, dyed hair army jacket girlfriend.
