CATONSVILLE, Md.—Two unearned runs in the fifth inning proved to be the deciding factor as the Harford baseball team fell to CCBC-Catonsville, 5-3, on Wednesday at Catonsville.
The Fighting Owls (6-4, 1-2 MDJUCO) trailed the Cardinals (4-4, 2-0 MDJUCO) by just one run going into the bottom of the fifth, but an Owl error allowed one run to score and put a second Catonsville runner in scoring position for the ensuing sacrifice fly, which gave the Cardinals a 5-2 lead.
Harford would tack on one more run in the top of the seventh, but would be held hitless in the eighth and ninth innings as Catonsville pulled out the 5-3 victory.
Sophomores Joe Harbach (Abingdon, Md./Edgewood) and Willie Barnola (Barquisimeto, Venezuela/UEC J.G. Bastidas) were the only Harford players with multiple hits as Harbach went 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run and Barnola was 2-for-4 with a double and ...Continue Reading
BEL AIR, Md.—The Harford softball team won its first outing of the season, downing Patrick Henry, 7-2 in game one, before the Fighting Owls (2-0) earned a 7-0 forfeit win over the Patriots (2-8) in game two on Thursday at Harford Softball Field.
The Owls led 7-6 in the bottom of the fourth in game two before a series of bizarre circumstances forced Patrick Henry to forfeit. The Patriot catcher was ejected, and Patrick Henry had no eligible players to substitute in, forcing a forfeit. In the process, the head coach was also ejected for arguing the catcher’s ejection. If play had continued for just one more inning, all players’ statistics would have been recorded, but instead they were stricken from the official record.

By the end of the first weekend in March, the 2010 Harford baseball team should have 13 games on its resume; instead they opened their season Feb. 20-21, going 3-1 in a four-game series at Brunswick and haven’t played since.
The scheduling setback is a result of the historic snowstorms which pounded the Baltimore/Washington, D.C. area in the beginning of February and its effects are likely to be felt well into March. Head coach Tom Eller is not all that worried, however, because of the veteran team he is putting on the field.
“I think [the snow] going to set just about everybody back, but it won’t affect us as much since we have so many sophomores,” he said. “They already know what is expected of them and they know the league and the competition that they will face. The delay might even ...Continue Reading
