Thanks To A ‘Sports Medicine’ Guru Bel Air Gets A Concert From Dr. Ralph Stanley

August 15, 2008

Thanks to Doctor William H.B. Howard, famed for his sports medicine forefront work, a living legend of bluegrass made it to Bel Air Sunday afternoon and set the small venue on fire, backed by the Clinch Mountain Boys.

Turns out Dr. Howard (just call me Bill) has known and treated Ralph Stanley for years. ‘We’ve been pals a long time and my daughter, Patty, and me decided to ‘make it happen’ and approached the folks at John Carroll to provide the venue and take home the proceeds.” Dr. Howard is often seen on area television stations when sports injuries occur to professional athletes. Baseball Dreams Come Alive For Bel Air Team At Cal Ripken World Series

August 14, 2008

“I’ve been dreaming of this since I was about 8…” said Tyler Woolsey. He is not alone. All of the Bel Air Braves are, and it was obvious as they participated in the Opening Day Ceremonies kicking off the ninth annual Cal Ripken World Series Friday night.

The Braves are the host team and as the representative of Harford County received a warm welcome from the crowd at Cal Sr.’s Yard. One by one, each of the 16 teams took to the field while every player, manager, ambassador and bat boy was announced. It was a moment of bliss for these young gamers standing on the cusp of the infield at Sr’s yard. Continue reading Baseball Dreams Come Alive For Bel Air Team At Cal Ripken World Series

Slow to the Finish Line - Aberdeen Greene Turtle Still Delayed

August 13, 2008

First the sign said “Coming Fall 2007″.

Now the date is just missing.

What could be delaying the opening The Greene Turtle in Aberdeen? The building appears close to finished, but remains empty inside. A source from the franchising and business development office for the restaurant chain tells The Chew “…that location is still waiting on permitting from the city. I know they were really hoping to open the doors by the end of this year, but I have not heard any updates of late”.

Could this be related to the city’s water problems? Maybe someone in the know could chime in and leave a comment. But for now, here’s a preview of what may or may not come to Aberdeen…

Wasting Time: An Ode To The Olympics

August 13, 2008

Since the Olympics are in full swing this week, I figured people might be interested in getting past the hump by watching something Olympics related. Here is an old Monty Python video making fun of the Olympics by coming up with ridiculous events. After watching sports like beach volleyball, it makes me wish that some of these were real. Especially the swimming event for non-swimmers.

After watching this, what crazy events would you like to see in the Olympics? And no, don’t say badminton, because it’s already an Olympic sport. It’s just never televised.

The Sad Competition: Survivors Of Officers Killed Or Injured On Duty Vie For Limited State Dollars

August 12, 2008

In the following Letter to The Dagger, Lynne Parry tells a compelling story about her life as a police survivor and her frustrating personal experience with the Edward T. Conroy Memorial Scholarship program, which was designed to assist the families of fallen heroes with the cost of college in Maryland. When Lynne’s sons were put on the Scholarship’s waiting list for lack of state funding, she reached out to elected officials for help. The Invisible Women: Havre de Grace Homeless Pair Deserve To Be More Than Just Part Of the Scenery

August 11, 2008

By Richard Clements

About 8 years ago two women and a 7-year old boy appeared, from a yet to be determined place, in Havre de Grace. At first they were seen as just moving in slo-mo from place to place. I saw them many times and simply thought them to be a few old ladies doing their daily slow motion ritual. I was not aware of the details. I was not aware that they were sleeping on the bench in the police station. I was not aware that they were sleeping in the post office. I was not aware that they were sleeping behind stores. The Bel Air Braves have been priming up for the big dance- the Cal Ripken World Series- which begins Friday night (opening ceremonies) and competition starting Saturday.  But first they took their talent on the road, participating in the Big Kahuna 12U tournament at the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach.  Then they paired up with the visiting Australia team for a scrimmage this past Monday night and made some more memories. Baltimore Movie Making 101: 48 Hours of Hangovers, Blood Spray And Things Going Wrong

August 7, 2008

Trying to get into filmmaking often times means you help out others who have experience. This way you hopefully learn the tricks of the trade and come away with an idea of how to create your own film. With this in mind, I decided to help a team for the Baltimore 48 Hour Film Project. And oh man, did things go badly.

First off, it is important to note that the Director had a bunch of her friends volunteering to help out. And from what I saw: making a film + friends = nobody is getting anything done. This is how the entire day of filming went. Continue reading Baltimore Movie Making 101: 48 Hours of Hangovers, Blood Spray And Things Going Wrong
