September 25, 2008

From Harford Community College Sports Information

FREDERICK, Md.—The Harford men’s soccer team and freshman goalie Taylor Dize (Bel Air, Md./Salem Christian) notched their third shutout and second straight with a 4-0 win over Frederick on Wednesday at Frederick.

Sophomore CJ Murray (London, England/Kaiserslatern) scored two goals and freshman Santiago Meija (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) added one goal and one assist as the Fighting Owls (4-5-1, 2-4-0 MDJUCO) rolled over the Cougars (0-9, 0-5 MDJUCO).

Freshman Sean Conlon (Weisbadin, Germany/West Nottingham Academy) put the Owls on the board with the eventual game-winner at the 22:00 mark after taking a cross from freshman Scott Covelly (Bel Air, Md./Fallston) and heading in past the Frederick keeper.

Just eight minutes later at the 30:00 mark, Murray notched his first goal of the game as he engaged in a footrace with a Cougar defender for a pass from freshman Jared Ferguson (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) eventually winning the ball and sneaking it past the keeper to put Harford up, 2-0.

The Owls carried that lead into the half and built on it in the 71st minute after Meija headed down a ball from sophomore Curtis Ballard (Pylesville, Md./Harford Christian) and put it away to take a 3-0 lead, before Murray tacked on his second goal of the game at the 83:00 mark after taking a pass through the midfield from Meija and beating the keeper one-on-one to give Harford the 4-0 win.

Dize totaled five saves and faced just five shots from the Cougars, while the Owls totaled 18 shots for the day and held a 3-0 advantage on corner kicks.

The Fighting Owls return to Harford Stadium on Friday when they take on CCBC-Catonsville as part of a doubleheader with the women’s team at 7:00 p.m

September 24, 2008

From Harford Community College Sports Information

ROCKVILLE, Md.—The Harford women’s tennis dropped just one match and remains undefeated on the season after it downed Montgomery College-Rockville, 8-1, on Tuesday in Rockville.

The Fighting Owls (4-0) swept the doubles matches for the third straight team dual match as the No. 1 team of freshman Ashley Sherinsky (Fallston, Md./Fallston) and sophomore Katrina Tiedeman (Jarrettsville, Md./North Harford) got things started with an 8-1 victory over Shadaia Otto and Nadine Montforte.

The team of freshman Courtney Brewer (Street, Md./North Harford) and Kelsey Strine (Abingdon, Md./Edgedwood) followed suit with an identical, 8-1, win over Sophia Pikalova and Aleunia Nakamura in the No. 2 slot, while the No. 3 team of freshman Kate Tiburzi (Fallston, Md./Fallston) and sophomore Julie Strong (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) one-upped the rest of the team by defeating Jennifer Gregory and Calvine Tiengwe, 8-0.

Tiburzi also blanked Nakamura during the N o. 4 singles match as she won, 6-0, 6-0, earning the MVP of the match award from head coach George Budelis after her incredible 20-game win streak between her doubles and singles matches. Not only did Tiburzi win her match, but she moved up a position for the second straight team match due to the absence of Tiedeman in the singles matches.

Brewer and Strine also earned commanding victories over their opponents in the higher positions as Brewer defeated Montforte, 6-3, 6-1 and Strine was victorious over Pikalova, 6-3, 6-0.

Sherinsky faced a challenge in the first set of the No. 1 match, pulling out a 7-5 victory over Otto, but easily beat her opponent 6-1 in the second set to secure the match point.

Strong also faced some tough competition in her first outing of the season at No. 6 singles as she took the first set, 6-4, against Makale Nyabhele, fell in the second set, 4-6, and pulled out the 8-6 win in the third set to give Harford the 8-1 win.

Freshman Agnes Burke (Havre de Grace, Md./Havre de Grace) was the only other competitor for the Fighting Owls as she fell to Gregory at No. 5 singles, 6-1, 7-6 (7-5).

The Fighting Owls return to competition this weekend when they travel to Mercer County College in West Windsor, N.J. this weekend for the ITA/Wilson Northeast Regional Championships.

Sheriff’s Office Receives Grant Targeting School Bus Safety

September 24, 2008

(Bel Air, MD – September 24, 2008) The Harford County Sheriff’s Office has received a grant targeting motorists who fail to stop for school buses that have their red lights flashing.

The grant, SBSE-2009-1106, is provided by the Governor’s Office of Crime Control and Prevention. Over 34,000 Harford County students ride a bus to and from school each day. This grant enhances the Sheriff’s Office enforcement efforts of the state law requiring motorists to stoptheir vehicles when they approach a school bus with its red lights flashing.

“Our goal is to keep our children safe,” said Sgt. Joseph VanSeeters, Supervisor of the Sheriff’s Office Traffic Unit.

“This grant will provide the funding for a deputy to follow schoolbuses where we have identified a chronic problem of violations.”

Maryland law requires the driver of a vehicle meeting or overtaking a school vehicle to stop at least 20 feet from the rear or front of the school vehicle when its alternating flashing red lights are operating.

The driver of any vehicle meeting or overtaking the school vehicle may not proceed until the school vehicle resumes motion or the alternating flashing red lights are deactivated. A violation of this article may result in a fine of $570.00.

The Sheriff’s Office offers the following tips for motorists driving during school hours:

•Drive slow and watch for children traveling to and from school when driving in neighborhoods with marked school zones;

•Watch for children walking in the street, especially if there are no sidewalks in theneighborhood; and,

•Learn and understand the flashing light system school bus drivers use to alert motorists for stopping. For additional information, please contact the Harford County Sheriff’s Office Traffic unit at 410-692-7872.

Councilman Guthrie Calls For Elimination Of Impact Fee In Light Of Mortgage Catastrophe

September 21, 2008

Harford County Councilman Dion Guthrie (District A) plans to introduce a bill to eliminate the impact fee on new home sales at the council meeting October 7, 2008. Guthrie said he has support at this time from Councilman Chad Shrodes (District D) and Councilwoman Mary Ann Lisanti (District F).

Guthrie told The Dagger he had not supported the impact fee when it was first enacted by the Council in 2005, saying it was “an unfair tax because it only taxes new homes and not used homes.” Guthrie noted that families moving into existing homes also impact schools and other infrastructure, which the impact fee was designed to offset.
